District Attorney Fani Willis said the lead lawyer she had hired had worked as a judge, private-practice attorney, prosecutor and criminal-defense lawyer. Photo: Brynn Anderson/Associated PressFulton County, Ga., District Attorney Fani Willis defended her decision to hire Nathan Wade as a special prosecutor, saying in a speech Sunday morning that the lead lawyer in her office’s racketeering case against former President Donald Trump and others is well qualified to serve in the role. One of the defendants in the case alleged in a court filing last week that Wade and Willis had been in a continuing romantic relationship since before Willis hired Wade, and that both had benefited financially from the arrangement. The filing also alleged that Wade didn’t have the proper experience for the job.

Allyn Stockton Jr. , who made his first court appearance for Giuliani last week, isn’t well-known outside of North Georgia. Perhaps his biggest claim to fame was a 2015 appearance before a congressional panel looking into a bear-hunting sting carried out by authorities along the Georgia-North Carolina border.

A ruling that places limits on voting-rights lawsuits cut against years of decisions by other courts. Photo: Thomas Metthe/Associated PressA federal appeals court ruled Monday that voters alleging discrimination in election rules don’t have a right to sue, a decision that could have a sweeping impact on voting rights if adopted by other courts. The Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in a 2-to-1 ruling, held that private plaintiffs can’t bring legal claims under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, a bedrock provision of the 1965 law that prohibits discriminatory voting practices. Instead, only the U.S. attorney general can bring such lawsuits, the court said.

Photo: Christian monterrosa/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesATLANTA—The judge overseeing the racketeering case against former President Donald Trump and 14 remaining co-defendants said he would soon place new limits on how evidence should be handled, after a defense lawyer admitted to disclosing video clips of witness interviews to a media outlet. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee said during an unusual court hearing Wednesday afternoon that he would impose a “protective order,” which would bar defense lawyers from disclosing certain information they get about the prosecution’s case during discovery.

Former President Donald Trump is facing four separate indictments at both state and federal levels. WSJ breaks down each of the indictments and what they mean for his 2024 presidential campaign. Photo Illustration: Annie ZhaoA pair of cases unfolding this week will provide an early test of novel legal arguments that Donald Trump should be disqualified from the 2024 presidential race because of his actions surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol. Courts in Colorado and Minnesota are considering claims that a little-invoked constitutional provision prevents Trump from holding office again. Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, enacted after the Civil War, disqualifies from public office those who swore to defend the Constitution and then “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against the U.S.

After weeks of failed votes, the House selected Rep. Mike Johnson as speaker following the ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy. Photo: Win McNamee/Getty ImagesMike Johnson was in a Louisiana courtroom in June 2015 defending tighter abortion restrictions adopted by the state when phones flashed with alerts that the Supreme Court had just recognized a constitutional right to same-sex marriage. Johnson dashed out of the ongoing proceedings to publicly criticize the decision, said opposing counsel Ilene Jaroslaw, who was representing abortion providers in the case. It was a moment, she said, that underscored the depth of Johnson’s zeal for conservative legal causes.

Ellis agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in exchange for a sentence that avoids jail time. Her decision to cooperate could be particularly harmful to Rudy Giuliani , another former lawyer for Trump who crisscrossed the country with Ellis in late 2020 promoting baseless voter fraud theories. Giuliani, Trump and the other 13 co-defendants without plea deals earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges against them, including racketeering.

Jenna Ellis, a lawyer who advised Donald Trump during his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss, pleaded guilty in the Georgia election interference case on Tuesday. Photo: John Bazemore/AFP/Getty ImagesATLANTA—Lawyer Jenna Ellis became Tuesday the third legal adviser to plead guilty in the Georgia racketeering case involving Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election, marking a blow to the former president’s defense and raising pressure on other loyalists to cut deals with the district attorney. Trump and 18 co-conspirators, including eight lawyers, were charged with participating in a criminal enterprise to subvert Joe Biden’s victory. A trial date hasn’t been scheduled, but a flurry of commitments to cooperate obtained by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis shows she is homing in on those who gave Trump legal advice in the months after the election.
